Lower strain, better airflow

As much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. That means small choices—how you set your thermostat, how often you change a filter, whether your ductwork leaks—can have a big impact on your utility bills and how comfortable your home feels.

This page is our “common sense” guide: practical, homeowner-friendly steps that help your HVAC system run the way it’s supposed to. If you ever want a second set of eyes on your system, we’ve been servicing the Reno–Sparks and surrounding areas since 1991, specializing in residential and light commercial heating, air conditioning, and ventilation.

Start with the easiest win: change your air filter

Your air filter is small, inexpensive, and surprisingly powerful. When it’s dirty, it slows airflow. That forces your system to work harder to heat or cool your home—wasting energy and often reducing comfort.

Here’s the routine we recommend:

  • Check your filter every month, especially during heavy-use months (winter and summer).
  • If it looks dirty after a month, change it.
  • At a minimum, change it every 3 months.

A clean filter also helps prevent dust and dirt from building up inside the system—buildup that can lead to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure. If you only do one thing on this page, make it this.

Tune up your HVAC equipment yearly

Think of HVAC maintenance the same way you think about your car: a little attention now can prevent bigger problems later.

Just as a tune-up for your car can improve your gas mileage, a yearly tune-up of your heating and cooling system can improve efficiency and comfort. It’s one of the best “common sense” investments you can make, because it supports everything you want from your system—steady temperatures, fewer surprises, and better performance.

Use a programmable thermostat the smart way

A programmable thermostat is ideal for people who are away from home during set periods of time throughout the week. When you use pre-programmed settings properly, you reduce heating and cooling when you don’t need it—and keep comfort where you want it when you do.

Through proper use of pre-programmed settings, a programmable thermostat can save you about $180 every year in energy costs.

If you’ve tried scheduling before and it felt confusing (or you gave up and left it in “hold”), you’re not alone. The goal isn’t complicated programming—it’s consistent, sensible setbacks and returns that match your real life.

Seal (and insulate) your ducts—because leaks are expensive

Ducts that move air to-and-from a forced air furnace, central air conditioner, or heat pump are often big energy wasters. The system can be working hard, but if the air leaks out into places you don’t want heated or cooled, you’re paying for comfort you never feel.

Sealing and insulating ducts can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as 20 percent—and sometimes much more.

Where to focus first:

  • Start with ducts that run through the attic, crawlspace, unheated basement, or garage.
  • Seal seams and connections using duct sealant (mastic) or metal-backed (foil) tape.
  • After sealing, wrap ducts in insulation so they don’t get hot in summer or cold in winter.

Once those “outside the conditioned space” runs are handled, look for any other accessible ducts in the heated or cooled part of the house.

Thinking about new equipment? Make the house and ducts part of the plan

If your HVAC equipment is more than 10 years old or not keeping your house comfortable, have it evaluated by Weakland's Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. If it’s not performing efficiently or needs upgrading, consider replacing it with a unit that has earned the ENERGY STAR.

Depending on where you live, replacing your old heating and cooling equipment with ENERGY STAR qualified equipment can cut your annual energy bill by nearly $200.

One important note before you invest: make sure you’ve addressed big air leaks in your house and the duct system. Sometimes those are the real sources of comfort problems rather than the equipment itself.

Proper installation matters (sometimes more than the model)

Replacing old heating and cooling equipment with new, energy-efficient models is a great start. But to make sure you get the best performance, the new equipment must be properly installed.

In fact, improper installation can reduce system efficiency by up to 30 percent—costing you more on your utility bills and possibly shortening the equipment’s life.

Here are the “common sense” installation details we care about:

Proper sizing of equipment

Many homeowners assume bigger is better. In reality, a system that’s too large may cycle on and off frequently, which can make comfort worse—not better. Incorrect sizing can also stress components and shorten equipment life.

Sealing ducts (and verifying leakage)

To ensure ducts are properly sealed, we can test the leakage rate. If ducts are very leaky (for example, more than 20% of the air moving through the system is leaking into spaces you do not want heated or cooled), we can seal the seams and connections using mastic, metal-backed (foil) tape, or an aerosol sealant. After sealing, we can wrap ducts in insulation.

Proper refrigerant charge (central air conditioners and heat pumps only)

A properly charged system operates more efficiently and can help prolong the life of the heating and cooling system. Our technicians can test and confirm the system has the correct amount of refrigerant, and if it’s not properly charged we can make the appropriate adjustment by adding or removing refrigerant.

Optimizing airflow

If airflow is too high or too low, you may see comfort problems and higher utility bills. Our technicians can test airflow and make needed adjustments for optimal performance.
